Time to Love Your Kitchen

Do you have a love-hate relationship with your kitchen that’s lacking on the love side? If so, now is the time to change things up. The good news: You can do it without a full-scale remodel. That’s exactly what we did for a wonderful local family. They wanted to update the French Country styled kitchen in their newly purchased home to better suit their modern sensibilities. However, they didn’t want to deal with a major renovation. Not a problem.

Here’s what we had to work with: Their kitchen featured high-quality elements but was a bit too sweet (like painted cows on the backsplash and ruffle-edged lighting). So, our challenge was set – streamline the kitchen, no more cows, make it look original, and no demo.

Thing first thing on our list was a thorough paint job – top to bottom. We started with the dark cabinets, spraying them a pale modern gray. The yellow walls also got the pale gray treatment. **Pro Tip: Painting your cabinets is transformative, but it’s a multi-day project. Make sure you hire a painter with experience in spraying cabinets.**

We removed the ornate corbels from the ceiling trusses and painted the trusses a dark grey to highlight the vaulted ceiling. And for the last bit of painting, we had a decorative painter remove the cows from the backsplash by disguising them to match the surrounding tiles.

Over the island, we replaced the ornate lighting fixtures with sleek, over-sized pendants lined with brass. We kept the amazing soapstone and marble counters.

Switching out all of the hardware also made a huge difference. And for the final touch, we added a Roman shade with a graphic print above the sink.

There you have it. A completely transformed kitchen without the need for a major remodel. To see more photos from this project we invite you to check out Curated, the new digital lookbook by our team here at Arlington Home Interiors.
