The 2021 Color of the Year

These days, I look for good omens wherever I can find them. So when Benjamin Moore recently announced their Color of the Year for 2021 is Aegean Teal, I took it as a positive sign. I love, love, love teal! It’s Arlington Home Interiors’ signature color – it’s on our logo, the main color on our website, and it shows up in the majority of our projects in some fashion. Benjamin Moore described this color as “an intriguing blue-green that creates natural harmony and invites us to reflect and reset.” Please bring on the harmony, 2021!

According to Benjamin Moore’s color and design manager, Hannah Yeo, “the gray undertone and the earthy quality that this tone has makes it so usable in the home environment. I think it’s going to really appeal to people that usually shy away from darker colors.” I couldn’t agree more.

We don’t use pure teal because it’s too bright, unless it’s used in a child or teen’s room. But this teal is softer and much more versatile. It makes a great wall color or an accent in furnishings or accessories like vases, trays, or pillows.

This shade of teal is a soothing, comfortable color that’s also quite versatile and modern. It could be used in virtually any room in your home. Personally, I think it would look smashing on a kitchen island. (I need to write that down.)

I love pairing it with grays and warmer taupes and browns. For a punch of color, it’s a fabulous complement for yellows, golds, and oranges.

Our dining room project (pictured above) gets a hit of teal in its chairs and the backs of the built-in shelves. The ceiling also has a slight tint of teal added to the white to add more interest.

We’re currently working on a beach house project in Rehoboth that will feature an amazing teal grasscloth wallcovering in the den. I can’t wait. It’s going to be gorgeous!

So if you’re one of the many considering a home improvement project this winter, consider adding this lovely, uplifting shade to your palette. It’s trending right now, but in my book, it will never go out of style!
