I couldn’t be more excited to share that another D.C. favorite is making its way to Arlington! Last week the owners of Stellina Pizzeria, a 2020 Bib Gourmand pick, announced they would be taking over Café Pizzaiolo’s spot in the Village at Shirlington later this year. Stellina’s Shirlington location will provide the same offerings of its D.C. location – a menu with a nod to the street food of the Southern Italian coast. Stellina Shirlington will also offer a deli-style counter featuring homemade pasta, sauces, pizza dough, and toppings allowing us to create our own Stellina dishes at home!
Owners Antonio Matarazzo and Chef Matteo Venini opened the first Stellina in D.C.’s Union Market just last year and it quickly became a favorite, with lines circling the corner. The duo previously worked together at the upscale Italian trio of restaurants Lupo Verde, Lupo Verde Osteria, and Lupo Marino, where Matarazzo was managing partner and Chef Venini was corporate chef. Stellina has been such a hit, that in addition to the existing plans to open a second D.C. location, they jumped at the chance to bring it to Matarazzo’s home base in Arlington.
“Bringing our modern interpretation of the classic pizza counter to the Shirlington neighborhood is a natural next step. My family and I live in South Arlington, and this new location lets us better serve our Northern Virginia guests with outdoor dining, curbside pick-up, and delivery. We’ll also enhance the many ways to experience Stellina at home with a deli counter offering fresh pasta by the pound, homemade sauces, and DIY pizza kits.” – Antonio Matarazzo
Stellina’s Shirlington home will be located at 2800 S. Randolph Street in the heart of the Village. The space, owned and operated by Federated Realty Investment Trust, will consist of a small dining room, bar, and patio. As long as COVID-19 restrictions are in place, Stellina Shirlington will offer limited indoor seating in the 48-seat dining room. The patio – tented and heated in anticipation of colder months ahead (yay!) – will seat 20.
So, now to the food. Stellina truly elevates the fast-casual experience. They call it “fine-casual” dining, and it is true. I have not tried everything, but I am a huge fan of Stellina’s Cacio & Pepe pizza, consisting of an assortment of Italian cheeses and toasted black pepper. All of Stellina’s pizzas are made in a neo-Neopolitan style. It is the crust that makes them so incredible. Chef Venini takes a unique approach to his signature-dough and puts a modern spin on the toppings. It is not surprising that the Cacio & Pepe made the Washington Post’s list of 10 best pizzas. Other menu offerings include an assortment of salads, appetizers, and scratch pasta, all inspired by the foods the owners grew up eating. Matarazzo grew up in Avellino, on the Southern coast of Italy, and Chef Venini hails from Lake Como. In its first year, Stellina made it to Washingtonian’s 100 Best Restaurants list.
Stellina Pizzeria will be a welcome addition to the Village at Shirlington. I cannot wait!
