Why You Should Reconsider Wallpaper

Wallpaper has definitely made a comeback (especially on Instagram) in the last couple of years. But if you ask an interior designer, wallpaper never went out of style! Designers love it because it can offer more drama and dimension than paint. And the great news is modern wallpaper is easier to install (and remove!) than your grandmother’s paper from back in the day. So, let’s talk about ways to add some character to your home with wallpaper.

The first thing to keep in mind is that you don’t need to wallpaper your entire room. For the Rosslyn condo pictured below, we added a geometric covering with texture to make a new focal wall for our client’s modern space. Forget the TV! I could binge watch this smashing wall!

Another great thing about modern wallpaper: the variety is amazing. From floral and natural prints to geometric patterns to texture-rich coverings like grasscloth (love!), there is so much to choose from. For the below powder room we used a hand-drawn print in a metallic design. Powder rooms are an ideal location to add some drama to your home without impacting your main living space.

We often go with classic grasscloth in our master bedroom designs. It’s subtle texture and colors create a layer of warmth and coziness.

One of my favorite ways to use wallpaper is to add dimension to a room. For the below master bedroom, we used a vinyl wall covering that looked like leather. This wallcovering complements the artwork rather than competing with it, adding a sophisticated, layered effect.

A trend I’m seeing more of these days is removable wallpaper. It’s literally “peel and stick.” This is a perfect option if you want to try a new look without having to commit to traditional wallpaper. I would use it to back some bookshelves or a vintage china cabinet or paper a small area or focal wall. It’s also great if you’re renting a space and you want to add your own personality. Companies like Tempaper offer a variety of beautiful designs and provide “how-to” guides for installing it yourself.

Wallpaper could be your new best friend. The design options are infinite and the installation and removal is easier than ever. What will you dream up?
