Our Favorite Winter Activities

Let’s face it…it’s getting cold out there! And while this weather can make us want to just curl up by the fire in our pajamas, the truth is there are some really fun things to do during the colder months. Here are some of our favorite winter activities…

So, it should come as no surprise to anyone that my favorite winter activity is shopping! In the fashion retail world, I started placing my inventory orders six months ago. So, I’ve been thinking about cooler weather and winter holidays for a long time! There are so many holidays to shop for — Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year, Chinese New Year. I find it relaxing to wander through stores and holiday markets picking up items for family and friends I care about along with things I would enjoy myself. I often wonder if people who receive gifts from me realize the care and time I put into finding just the right thing. Even if they don’t, I get so much joy from the process that it is okay. And, it is so much nicer to find things when you aren’t stressed during the last few days before a major gift-giving event!

Suzanne and I love hosting potluck dinner-game nights in the winter with our neighborhood friends and their kids. I usually make a big pot of spicy Jambalaya and have a good Spotify list going when everyone arrives. After dinner, we break out all-age games like Taboo, 5 Second Rule or Things. It’s always a good time and it’s extra fun if there’s snow outside.

My absolute favorite winter activity is to bundle up, grab a nice big cup of apple cider (sorry, not a fan of hot chocolate!) and walk those neighborhoods with the best holiday lights. A great resource for finding the best streets is Holly’s Tacky Christmas Lights. So far for 2019, she has identified homes on the following streets in Arlington: N. Quebec, N. Abingdon, S. Harrison, S. Quincy, and S. Oakland. Or, if you want to venture out to some of the larger light displays in our area, some of the best are listed here:

Enchant Christmas, Nationals Park, 11/22-12/29

Meadowlark Winter Walk of Lights, Meadowlark Gardens, Vienna, 11/8-1/5

Bull Run Festival of Lights, Bull Run Regional Park, 11/22-1/5

One of my favorite winter activities is going to Wintergreen. It’s nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (about three hours away), so my family and I can whip out the skis and enjoy a couple of days on the slopes. At night we can enjoy one of the many breweries and restaurants in the valley – we love Devil’s Backbone. They have an awesome fire pit, yummy nachos, and great beers!

I have so many favorites! I love ice skating, building a fire in my fireplace at home, hot tubbing outdoors, going to hot yoga classes – especially in the Infrared heated studio at MTM in Clarendon!, traveling to somewhere warm for a long weekend, cooking stews, and baking healthy, nut packed muffins.
