One of my favorite pastimes is going to the movies. I almost never watch a movie at home – I can spend a day binge-watching a series but never can seem to find the time to sit for a full movie. There is something about the shared experience of watching a movie with a crowd in the theatre with a bag of popcorn. Obviously, we have not been able to do that for months. But in Arlington, and close by, communities are coming together to create that experience in a responsible, socially-distanced way – drive-ins are popping up all over, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Here are a few spots where you can catch a flick:
This Saturday, July 25, the Ballston Connect Club is hosting a retro drive-in movie night with a screening of Mrs. Doubtfire. Arrive and get settled at 8:15pm. The movie will start at dusk. While you should bring your own popcorn (and any other movie snacks), there will be treats from District Doughnuts on hand. Space is limited. The general admission cost is $40 per vehicle. Ballston Connect Club members can attend free of charge. And, many Ballston residents and employees can register for the Ballston Connect Club for free (for others, the cost is $120/year). Running through August 29, the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO) hosts free movies at the Arlington Career Center, just off the Pike, on Saturdays. This Saturday, July 25, they will screen Twister. The upcoming lineup includes Crazy Rich Asians (Aug 1), Apollo 13 (Aug 8), Ready Player One (Aug 15), Coco (Aug 22), and Mary Poppins (Aug 29). The show starts when the sun sets. Outside food and drinks are permitted. Space is limited and registration is required for attendance. Each Thursday at 10am, a link to register for that Saturday’s movie will be shared in the CPRO newsletter. To subscribe to the newsletter and receive the link, click here.
